INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD
The Holy Prophet SAW had not yet been born, when his father Hadrat Abdullah was instructed by his own father Hadrat Abdul Muttalib to bring dates from Medina. Hadrat Abdullah went to Medina leaving his son (the Prophet SAW ) still in his mother's womb. Incidentally, he died there and thus the Holy Prophet SAW was deprived of his father's patronage his birth.
In the beginning his mother and then, after a few days, Thaubiyah, the slave girl of Abu Lahab, suckled the Holy Prophet in the infancy. After that divine favour of suckling and looking after him was bestowed upon Hadrat Haleemah Sadiyah.
It was customary among the Arab nobles to send their children in the surrounding villages for suckling the infants. And by this practice the children used to attain good health and learn the pure Arabic language. Because of this fact, the village women used to go to cities quite often to fetch the infants for suckling.
Hadrat Haleemah Sa'diyah said, " I left Taif for Macca in the company of the women belonging to Banu sa'd (tribe) in search of the suckling children. It was a year of famine and I had an infant in my lap. But due to destitution and starvation my own milk was insufficient. And he used to toss restlessly throughout the night due to hunger. And because of him, we had to pass the night awake. We had a she-camel with us, but it also nit yield milk. The ass, that I was riding during my journey to Makkah, was so lean that could not keep pace with others. Even the co-travelers were fed-up with it. However, the journey ended with difficulty. In arrival in Makkah, every women ( wet-nurse), who saw the prophet (as a baby), did not accept his nursing This was due to hearing that he was an orphan as she expected little reward for suckling him."
On the other side the star of Haleemah's fortune was, however, at the zenith. The very shortage of her own milk proved a source of mercy for her, because none of the other parents cared to give their child to her.
Haleemah said, " I told my husband that it didn't look proper to go back empty handed. I better take with me this orphan child ( i.e. the Prophet)." Her husband approved it and she took with her this most precious gem by whom not only the houses of Aaminah and Haleemah but even the East and West were going to illumine.
BLESSINGS DURING SUCKLING
By the grace of Allah, Hadrat Haleemah was fortunate enough to have the would be leader of the world in her lap. When she sat down to suckle him, the blessings started to manifest them. Surprisingly, she had so much milk at that time that the prophet and his foster brother sucked it to their entire satisfaction and they slept peacefully. And when she looked at the she-camel, her udders were full of Milk. Hadrat Haleemah's husnabd milked the she-camel and all of them drank the milk to their hearts' content. They spent the night peacefully and this was the first night after a long time that they slept soundly. According to Hadrat Haleemah, her husband also admitted and said, " Haleema, you have brought a very auspicious child." She replied, " I also hoped that he was the most auspicious boy." After that they departed from Mecca and Hadrat Haleemah was riding on the same ass with the Prophet SAW on her lap. As stated by her, "But this time, I was surprised to not that, it was so fast in its speed that no other animal could compete it at all. My companion women astonishingly enquired if it was the same ass on which I had come. Anyhow, after covering the path, we reached home, where acute famine was prevailing and all the beasts of milk had gone milkless. But as soon as I entered my house, Hadrat Haleemah said, " My sheep were enriched with milk."
Hadrat Haleemah further said, " Now, every day my sheep returned with their udders full milk, whereas others didn't contain a drop of it. people belonging to my tribe advised their shepherds to tend their sheep at the same pasture where Hadrat Haleemah grazed her sheep, but they didn't know that it was not the specialty of the pasture or the jungle. It was rather the divinely entertainment for a special jewel ( the prophet SAW). Where could they bring it from? So even after grazing from the same place, their sheep always returned full of milk. We had been observing similar blessing for full two years and thereafter I weaned him from my breast."
FIRST WORDS OF PROPHET SAW
Hadrat Haleemah has stated, " When his suckling was complete the following words were on his tongue :
![]()
Allaho Akbar Kaberan wal-hamdu-lillahi hamdan katheeran-wa-subnhan Allahi bukra-tan-wa-aseela
"Allah is Greatest, much Great ; All praise, abundant praise, is due to Him ; Glorified be He in the morning and the evening" .
His growth was better than all other children and within two years he began a appear much robust. Now, according to the practice in vogue, we took him to his mother, though, because of his blessings, we did not like to part with him. Incidentally, plague was breaking out in Mecca during that year and, therefore, making this epidemic an excuse, we brought him back with us. While living with us he often went out, looked at the boys remain throughout the day? I told him , " He goes to tend the sheep." He said, " Please me along with him." And after that he used to accompany his foster brother (Abdullah) daily.
" Once it so happened that both of them were looking, after their sheep, when all of a sudden Abdullah come home gasping and said to his father, " Two men in white clothes caught hold of my Quraishi brother, made him lie down and slit apart his belly. I have come to inform you leaving him in that condition, "Being worried, we both rushed to the jungle and was him sitting there, but his face was pale due to fear. I asked him, " My son, what's the matter? He replied, " Two persons came in white clothes, slit apart the belly and after search brought out some substance from it. I don't know what it was." We brought him back home. Thereafter, I (Haleemah) took him to a so a thsayer. Who, on seeing him, got up from his seat and, after Packing him up close to his chest, cried, " O the posterity of Arabs, run and get rid of the calamity looming over your heads. The appropriate for which is that step kill this child and kill me also with him. If you allow him to survive, then bear in mind that he will wipe out your religion and invite you to a religion, which you have never heard of before."
On hearing it, Haleemah go angry and, after snatching him the prophet from the hands of that wretched person, said, " Have you gone made? you yourself need your own mental medical treatment. Haleemah took him back home, but this second event compelled her to hand him over to his mother (Aminah), because she herself could not ensure the protection the Prophet deserved.
When after reaching Mecca, she made him over to his respected mother, she asked Haleemah the cause of returning him so soon in spite of her desire to keep him. After insistent enquiry she had to narrate the whole event. Having heard it the Prophet's mother said. " Of coures, my son has a special feature. " And thereafter she related the wonderful events which happened during the course of her conception and at the time of delivery.
Mother's Demise
The Holy Prophet was four year old, when his mother passed away at Abwa on her way back from Madina.
The six years old child, who had been bereaved of his father before birth, was now left without the affectionate care this mother. But the Merciful Lord, in whose care this orphan was being brought up, is Independent of these causes.
Abdul Muttalib's Demise
After his parents, he come under the guardianship of his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, But Almighty Allah wanted to let the world know that this promising lad was directly under His Merciful care. The also cause of all causes had Himself become his Guardian. When he become two months and eight year old, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib also died.
