PREACH PROCESS
The mission of Prophet Muhammad SAW was to restore the worship of the One True God, the creator and sustainer of the universe. This was taught by Prophet Hadrat Ibrahim AS and all Prophets of God, and to demonstrate and complete the laws of moral, ethical, legal, and social conduct and all other matters of significance for the humanity at large.
The first few people who followed this message were: his cousin Hadrat Ali, his servant Hadrat Zayd ibn Harithah, his friend Hadrat Abu Bakr and his wife and daughters. They accepted Islam by testifying that:
"There is no Deity (worthy of worship) except Allah (The One True God) and Muhammad SAW is the Messenger of Allah."
Islam means peace by submission and obedience to the Will and Commandments of God. And those who accept Islam are called Muslims, meaning those who have accepted the message of peace by submission to God.
In the first three years of his mission forty people (men and women) accepted Islam. This small group comprised of youth as well as older people from a wide range of economic and social background. The Prophet SAW was directed by a recent revelation to start preaching Islam to everyone. He then began to recite revelations to people in public and invite them to Islam. The Quraish, leaders of Makkah, took his preaching with hostility. The most hostile and closest to the Prophet SAW was his uncle Abu Lahab and his wife. Initially, they and other leaders of Quraish tried to bribe him with money and power. This was including an offer to make him king if he were to abandon his message. When this did not work, they tried to convince his uncle Hadrat Abu Talib. They offered Hadrat Abu Talib to accept the best young man of Makkah in place of Muhammad SAW and to allow them to kill Muhammad SAW. His uncle tried to persuade the Prophet to stop preaching. But the Prophet SAW said: "O uncle, if they were to put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand to stop me from preaching Islam, I would never stop. I will keep preaching until Allah makes Islam prevail or I die."
PREACHING ISLAM TO THE WORLD
In the beginning, when revelation started, the Holy Prophet SAW was not deputed to openly disseminate Islam, but the injunctions were confined to his own self. Later, after its suspension for a few days, when the revelation was restarted, he was the reign of ignorance and perversion all over the word, especially the Arabs' false pride, vanity and their blind following of their ancestors did allow them to accept the truth. Therefore, initially, the divine expediency demanded that open propagation of Islam might not be commanded, so that the people might not be scornful tight in the beginning. Thus the Holy Prophet SAW started his mission by inviting toward Islam only those person whom he knew he visualized, through his farsightedness, the signs of betterment righteousness.
Prophet's pious wife, Hadrat Khadijah RA, prophet's friend Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddiq RA, Prophet's paternal cousin, Hadrat Ali RA and his adopted son Zaid bin Harithah RA were the foremost among those who embraced Islam. Hadrat Abu Bakr RA was Prophet's old friend, prior to the declaration of prophethood, and was fully aware of his truthfulness, honesty and excellence in conduct. As soon as the Prophet informed him that he was the Messenger of Allah, Hadrat Abu Bakr immediately attested it and , after reciting the Kalimah (the code of Islam) embraced Islam.
Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddiq RA was a confirmed elderly person in prophet's community and all people consult him in each affair. After entering the fold of Islam, he also started inviting toward Islam those people in whom he visualized the signs of betterment and righteousness. As a result of it Hadrat Uthman RA, Hadrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf RA, Hadrat Sa'd bin ABi Waqqas RA, Hadrat Zubair bin Al-Awam RA, and Hadrat Talha bin Ubaidullah RA, all accepted his invitation. He took them to the Holy Prophet SAW and all of them embraced Islam. After the, Hadrat Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah RA, Hadrat Ubaidah bin-il-Harith bin Abdul Muttlib RA, Hadrat Saeed bin Zaid Advi RA, Hadrat Othman bin Hadrat Mazoomi RA, Hadrat Khalid bin Saeed bin-il-Aas RA, Hadrat Othman bin Maz'oon RA and both of his brothers Qadamah and Obaidullah as well as Arqam bin Arqam RA embraced Islam. All of them belonged to the Quraish tribe, while Hadrat Sohaib Roomi RA, Hadrat Ammar bin Yasar RA, Hadrat Abu Zar Ghiffari RA and Hadrat Abdullah bin Mas'ood RA, who also embraced Islam at that time, were not Quraish. Since invintaion toward Islam was conveyed secretly in those days, the Islamic prayers and other rituals were also performed secretly, so much so that the son used to hide himself from his own father during his prayers and the father from his own infidel son.
When the number of Muslims exceeded thirty, the Holy Prophet SAW appointed a big house for them, where they used to gather and the Prophet SAW used to educate them in religious affairs. This procedure of the invitation toward Islam continued for three years. Meanwhile a fair number of persons belonging to Quraish tribe embraced Islam and then other people also started to embrace Islam. This news spread in Mecca and it was the talk of the town. Now the time was ripe for open propagation of Islam.
DECLARATION ON MOUNTAIN 'SAFA'
After three years, when people started
embracing Islam in large number. The Lord of the worlds commanded the Holy
Prophet SAW to openly invite the people towards Islam.
Prophet's immediately complied with the divine orders, proceeded to the top of Mount Safa in Mecca and called Quraish by name of their each clan. When they all gathered there, Prophet's enquired from all of them.
If I inform you that an aggressor's army behind this mountain in advancing toward you and is ready to attack you, will you confirm me?"
Having listened to him, all said with one
voice, "Surely, we shall consider your news absolutely correct, because we have never seen you telling lies. "Thereafter, prophet's said, Well, I inform you
that if you did not forsake your false creed, Allah's torment is quite near to
you." " So far as I know, not a single person in this world has brought for his
nation a gift like the one I have brought for you. The gift I have brought for
you is your welfare and success in both the world. And I have been commanded by
the Lord of the worlds to invite you towards it. By God, if at all I had told
lies to the people of the whole worlds, I would not had done so at least with
you. Had I cheated you at least. I swear by the Holy One, unto Whom no one is
comparable or His associate. that I am the messenger and prophet of Allah sent
to you in particular and the rest of the world in general. Opposition and Enmity of the whole Arabia and Steadfastness of the
Prophet. The programme of dissemination of
and invitation toward Islam continued, but when the Arabs become aware of the
fact that in his revelations the reality of their idols and the stupid ness of
their worshippers was exposed, they girded their loins against the Prophet SAW and
delegation representing them come to his uncle Hadrat Abu Talib to ask him either he
should stop the Prophet from such objectionable utterance or alienate himself
from his support. Hadrat Abu Talib nicely quibbled them and the prophet SAW carried on his mission of the propagation of the truth and prohibiting the
people from the worship of the idols. When the Arabs could no more tolerate it,
they again went to Hadrat Abu Talib and emphatically told him to better control his
nephew otherwise they would all fight against him till one of the opponent
groups is perished.
RESPONSE OF PROPHET SAW AGAINST ARABS TRIBES
Now Hadrat Abu Talib also got worried and talked to the Holy
Prophet SAW in this connection, who replied, " My respected uncle, by God, if they could bring and place the sun on my right hand and the moon on my left hand and then ask me to stop conveying the message of God to the humanity, I would never be prepared to do like that, till the true religion spreads among the people or at least I lay down my life in this struggle.
When Hadart Abu Talib saw this determined attitude of the Prophet SAW, he said, " Very well; you go and continue your mission, I shall also never give up my support and help to you."
SPREADING THE HATRED AMONG PEOPLE AND ITS REVERSE EFFECT
When the Quraish noticed that Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib were on his side and the Hajj season was approaching fast, they apprehended that he would make enthusiastic efforts in the propagation of Islam and they were also aware of the magnetic attraction in his truthful words, and as such his religion might spread all over the world. Therefore, they met together and decided that their own men be posted on all the paths leading to Mecca so that people coming for Hajj from different places might be informed at a far distance that there existed a magician in Mecca, who by the force of his speech, was creating differences between the father and the son, the husband and the wife and among all relation. they should better not meet him.
As if it was providential, their this step, on the contrary, served the Holy Prophet's purpose of the dissemination of Islam. Had they not done so, it was very likely that many people might not have heard about him, but this sort of struggle on the part of the enemies of Islam made every one fond of him.
PERSECUTION BY THE QURAISH AND PRESEVERANCE OF THE PROPHET SAW
When the Quraish failed in all their plots against him and was that his invitation toward Islam was gaining popularity day by day, and people were embracing Islam in large number, they started persecution of every type. They called some vagabonds and persuaded them to ridicule him in every meeting and persecute him in every possible way.
A MURDER PALN AGAINST THE PROPHET SAW
Once it so happened that the Holy Prophet SAW was offering his prayer near the sacred Ka`bah. When he assumed the position of Sajdah. Abu Jehl, presuming it a golden opportunity , made up his mind to crush his sacred head. But: " If the enemy is strong, the Guardian is stronger." When he come near to the Prophet with a stone, his hands started trembling. The stone fell down, his face turned pale and rushed to his own people to tell the that, as soon as he intended to raise his hands toward him (the Prophet SAW), a curious type of camel pounced upon him with his mouth open and it was just to devour him. He also told them that he had never seen such a dreadful camel.
This is the event which occurred in the presence of a gathering of the infidels and Abu jehl himself acknowledged it. Abu Jehl, Aqbah bin Abi Moheet, Abu Lahab, Aas bin Vaeil, Aswad bin Yaghus, Aswad bin Abdul Muttalib, Waleed bin Mugheerah and Nadar bin Harith, all these persons kept torturing the Holy Prophet SAW. None of them had the guts of embracing Islam; rather, all of them died most disgracefully. Some of them were killed in the battle of Badr and the others died of most abominable diseases.
ALTERNATIVE INDUCEMENTS BY QURAISH
When the Quraish was that their coercive methods did not work, they collectively decided after mutual consultation, that they should send to him their cleverest chief, Utbah bin Rahiyah, to induce the the Prophet with every worldly attraction, which might dissuade him from him mission. Utbah come in when he was his prayers in the Mosque. Getting closer to him, he said, 'O Nephew, in order of precedence, according to our ancestral lineage, you are superior to all of us. And in spite of that, you have wedged a differentia in the community. You condemned them and their idols. You dunned them and their ancestors as ignorants. Today, you better express what is in your heart. By all these activities, if your object is to gather much wealth. We are prepared to gather for you so much wealth that would be the wealthiest man among the people of Mecca. If you desire to become a chief, we shall agree to make you the chief of all the Quraish and shall do nothing but with your permission; if your object is become a king, we can select you as a king of all us, and if, (God forbid) your are possessed by any jinn and this is his word (revelation) that you convey to the people, and you feel that you are unable to get rid of it, we shall search for a doctor for you treatment".
When Utbah had finished his talk, the Holy Prophet SAW recited, in reply to his whole story, only one Surah of the Qur'an, which stunned Utbah. He returned to his people and said, "By God, To day I have heard such a discourse as I have never heard in my life. By God, it is neither poetry, nor sooth-saying and nor magic. In my opinion you better give up persecution against this man (the Prophet SAW), because the discourse I have heard from him is definitely going to be known in a glorious manner. I am your well-wisher. You accept my advice and at least wait for a few days. If the Arabs prevailed upon him, you will would deliverance from this trial, and if he prevailed upon the Arabs then his honour would be our honour because he belonged to our tribe.
The Quraish were surprised to listen all this from their most adroit chief, and they relieved themselves by saying that Muhammad SAW has cast a spell upon him.
Having failed in all their tactics, the Quraish restarted teasing and persecuting the Prophet SAW his Companions, the associates and the relatives. The Companions like Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) were severely persecuted. On this very account, the mother of Hadrat Ammar bin Yasir was martyred in the most grievous manner. And this was the very first incident of martyrdom in Islam.
MIGRATION TO ABYSSINIA REACH PROCESS
The Holy Prophet SAW was
himself facing all sorts of tortures and persecution with patience. But when the
some in human treatment was given to the respected Sahabah (The Arabic word 'Sahabah' means the Companions of the Holy
Prophet SAW (Its singular is Sahabi), and his
other dear and near ones, the Holy Prophet, observing that they were tolerating
it with great patience and were not prepared them to migrate to Abyssinia. So
in the fifth year of prophet hood being crowned with during the month of
Rajab
(Seventh month of
Islamic Calendar).
Twelve men and women migrated to Abyssinia
including Hazrat Othman and his pious wife Ruqayyah.
Negus, the king of Abyssinia, welcome these
emigrants. All of them began to live there safe and sound. When the Quraish know
about it they sent Amr bin Aas and Abdullah bin Rabiyah to Negus to inform him
hat these refugees were trouble-makers and as such they should not be allowed
to stay there. They requested him hand over those refugees to them.
Negus was thoughtful person. He replied to
them that he would not be so unless he investigated about the religion and ideas
of the refugees. When Negus enquired from them about their religion and the
correct problems to it, Jafar bin Talib stepped forward and said: " O King ! Formerly, We were all ignorant,
used to worship the idols and eat the flesh of dead animals, and indulged in
vulgar things, severed relationship and exhibited bad conduct. The powerful
amongst us used to trample over the weak. Under such circumstances Almighty
Allah has sent to us messenger, by His grace, who belongs to our family. We are
well aware of his antecedents, his truthfulness, trustworthiness and his piety.
He invited us to believe in one God and not to associate anyone else with him,
discard idol worship and speak the truth. He also taught us to be kind and
helpful towards the relatives, good to our neighbours. He prohibited us from the
unlawful, bloodshed, telling lies and usurping the wealth of the orphan. He
enjoined upon us to say the regular prayer, pay the poor-due and perform Hajj.
We heard all these things and embraced Islam.
Negus was much impressed by this argument of
Hadrat Jafar. He returned both the messengers of Quraish and himself embraced
Islam. The Muhajreen (refugees) lived there for
about three months, and having a peaceful stay there they returned to Mecca. By
they time Hadrat Umar, Farooq Azam, had embraced Islam. Earlier, the census of
Muslims was not more than forty men and eleven women. But with coming of
Farooq-i- Azam in the fold if Islam, the Muslims achieved a sort of great
honour. The people, who had faith in the truth of Islam through its candid
reasons. but could not disclose it because of the fear of persecution by
Quraish. now openly embraced Islam and thus Islam continued spreading and
flourishing in Arabia.
TREATY OF BOYCOTT
When the Quraish observed that respect for
the Holy Prophet SAW and Prophet's Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) has on the increase day by day and that the king of Abyssinia had also honoured the Muslims, they apprehended their own end.
All the Quraish, therefore, decided that it may be demanded from Banu Abdul Muttalib and Banu Hashim that they should hand over their nephew Muhammad SAW to them otherwise they (the Quraish) would severe their relations with them. But Banu Muttalib did not yield to their demand. Therefore, a treaty was written to the effect that all sorts of relations be severed with Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, and in future there would be no relationship, marriage, or dealings of any sort with them. And this treaty was hung in Biatullah. (Home of God) The Holy Prophet SAW and all his companions and relatives were imprisoned in the valley of mountain. At that time all the family members of Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, with the exception of Abu Lahab, whether Muslims of infidel, indiscriminately accompanied Abu Talib and were besieged in the valley. All paths from all directions leading to the cave were blocked. When their ration exhausted, they got extremely restless and due to the intensity of hunger they had to eat even the leaves of trees.
Noticing this sort of condition, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the companions to migrate to Abyssinia again. This time a big caravan, consisting of eighty three men and twelve women, migrated.
The Muslims belonging to Yeman also accompanied them including Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari and his community members.
The Holy Prophet SAW, his family and companions remained in this internment for about three years bearing all these misfortunes and persecution. Thereafter some men of the opponents showed their willingness to cancel the treaty and lift the siege. And the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was also told through revelation that the treaty was eaten up by the white-ants and had left not a single letter in it except the name of Allah. Prophet's informed the people about it. And when the treaty was examined, it was exactly according to the Prophet's information. In short the siege was lifted.
EMBRACING ISLAM BY TUFAIL BIN AMAR DUSI (May Allah be pleased with him)
Meanwhile Hazrat Tufail bin Amr Dusi, a thorough gentlemen and chief of his trible, received audience of the Holy Prophet SAW and, in view of the well-known reality of Islam and the excellent conduct of the Prophet SAW, the willingly embraced Islam. He requested the Messenger of Allah: " I have a big say in my tribe. I shall invite them also to Islam, but you pray to Almighty Allah that I may be blessed with an open sign, through which I may convince them about my message." The Prophet SAW prayed for him and Almighty Allah brightened his forehead with a light which was glowing in the dark like a dazzle-lamp. When Hadrat Tufail bin Amar met his tribe it occurred to his mind lest his people might mistake this light as a sign of misfortune or a disease, and say that he was inflicted with this( imaginative) disease because of embracing Islam. He therefore beseeched Almighty Allah that the light in his forehead be transferred to his whip. The prayer was acceded to and that light was attached to his whip like a suspended bright lamp.
Approaching his tribe men he started the propagation of Islam and some persons embraced Islam as a result of his effort. Since they were not as many as he desired, he requested the Holy Prophet SAW to pray for his success. The Prophet SAW prayed for him and then asked him to go back and invite the people to Islam again in a polite way.
Hadrat Tufail returned to his people and again invited them toward Islam. By the grace of Allah JSN he succeeded and after the battle Khandaq (ditch) he brought with him about seventy to eighty Muslim families with him at the time of the battle of Khaibar and all of them participated in Jahad.
